About Gimli, Manitoba

On the southwestern shores of Lake Winnipeg, one of the worlds great lakes, less than one hour drive from Winnipeg, Gimli's long sandy beaches, tranquil harbour and busy, friendly waterfront have made it a favorite summer retreat for Manitobans and visitors from around the world.

Gimli is a bustling community of over 6000 that offers growing families and retiring seniors all the amenities of big city life, within easy reach - and often within easy walking distance. Many residents commute to Winnipeg.

Residents benefit from one of Manitoba's lowest municipal tax rates, the best of health care facilities and providers, quality education from pre-school to post-secondary and a strong economic base. And while Gimli is growing, this community maintains its small town warmth and charm.

The Gimli New Horizons 55+ Center boasts more than 400 members! Lawn bowling, line dancing, quilting, floor shuffleboard, cribbage and an exercise program are some of the many activities held at the centre. Gimli is an "Age Friendly" community and strives to meet the needs of seniors residents.

For Families seeking an active lifestyle and a great community to grow up in, Gimli offers plenty of action. Gimli has minor hockey, indoor curling, indoor and outdoor skating rinks, Tai Chi, Zumba classes and a well equipped gym at the recreation center. Numerous other activities are offered in the community - soccer, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, Ukranian dancing, karate, bowling, golf, sailing, skydiving, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.

Gimli is dedicated to protecting its beautiful beaches and the environment. The first phases of Gimli's new $19 million waste water treatment plant with its sequencing batch reactor and ultra-violet technology, one of Manitoba's first treatment facilities to remove phosphorous from waste water, are up and running. When the final phase is complete, the plant will serve up to 15,000 people.

Gimli has established an Environment Committee that works closely with Council and all other South Basin communities to take action on issues currently facing Lake Winnipeg.

Gimli Harbour is home port for the Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium vessel Namao.
